  • Production, repair and relining according to model, drawing or application.

Filter Baskets, Strainer Baskets and Sieve Baskets

Filter baskets, sieve baskets and strainer baskets are used to remove solid particles from liquids or process streams. They are usually installed in a filter housing, pipeline, tank, pump suction line or process installation and are designed to collect contamination without causing unnecessary downtime.

Unlike many closed filter elements, filter baskets are easy to remove. The contamination remains inside the basket, after which the basket can be taken out, cleaned and placed back into the installation. This makes them particularly suitable as pre-filters, coarse filters, pump protection filters or reusable process filters.

Omnimesh produces, repairs and relines custom filter baskets and strainer baskets. We work based on an existing model, dimensions, drawing, sketch, photo or filter housing.

What is a filter basket or strainer basket?

A filter basket is a removable metal filter element that captures solid particles from a liquid or gas stream. The basket is placed inside a filter housing or installation and retains dirt, sand, rust particles, fibres, product residues or other solid materials.

The liquid or air stream passes through the openings of the basket. The unwanted particles remain inside the basket. Afterwards, the filter basket can be removed and cleaned.

Filter baskets are often used for coarse and medium filtration, but with fine filter mesh they can also be used for finer separation.

How does a filter basket work in an installation?

A filter basket is placed inside a housing or filter body. The process stream enters the housing and is guided through the basket. Solid particles larger than the opening of the filter medium remain inside the basket. The filtered medium then continues through the installation.

During maintenance, the filter housing is opened and the basket is removed. The collected contamination can then be taken out, after which the basket is placed back into the housing. In many applications, this is faster and more practical than replacing a complete filter element.

Depending on the type of filter housing, the flow can run from inside to outside or from outside to inside. That is why the seal at the top edge, flange or collar is important: the medium must not bypass the basket without passing through the filter surface.

Construction of a metal filter basket

A filter basket usually consists of a combination of a filter surface, a supporting structure and an edge finish. The construction is adapted to the installation in which the basket must fit.

Possible components include:

  • cylindrical, conical or rectangular basket
  • perforated plate
  • stainless steel filter mesh
  • fine mesh as an additional filter layer
  • support grid or supporting inner basket
  • top ring or collar
  • flange or sealing edge
  • flat or reinforced bottom
  • handle, pull ring or lifting eye
  • reinforcement rings
  • welded or soldered joints
  • gasket area or sealing surface

A simple filter basket can consist of perforated plate with a top edge and handle. A finer filter basket can consist of a perforated support basket with a fine filter mesh fitted over or inside it.

Custom-made filter baskets

Not every filter basket is available as a standard product. Many filter housings, older installations and machine-specific solutions require a filter basket that fits exactly.

Omnimesh produces filter baskets, sieve baskets and strainer baskets fully custom-made according to an existing model, drawing, sketch, photo or dimensions.

Customisation is possible in:

  • diameter
  • height or length
  • conical or cylindrical shape
  • rectangular or special shape
  • top edge, collar or flange
  • bottom design
  • handle or pull ring
  • perforation size
  • mesh opening
  • filter fineness
  • wire diameter
  • number of filter layers
  • material choice
  • reinforcement rings
  • sealing surface or gasket area

This allows the filter basket to be perfectly adapted to the existing filter housing and to the load in your process.

Reproducing a filter basket based on an existing model

When a filter basket is worn, damaged or no longer available, we can produce a new one based on the old model.

We record the dimensions, shape, edge, bottom, handle, seal and filter fineness. We then produce a new filter basket that fits into the same housing. If desired, we can also improve the design, for example with a stronger material, a different perforation, an additional support layer or a finer filter mesh.

This is useful when:

  • the original filter basket is no longer available
  • the existing basket is deformed or worn
  • the basket no longer seals properly in the filter housing
  • the filter fineness needs to be adjusted
  • the installation must remain in use
  • a more durable alternative is required

Repair and relining of filter baskets

A damaged filter basket does not always need to be completely replaced. If the top ring, flange, handle or basic structure is still usable, we can replace the damaged filter surface.

During repair, we remove the worn filter mesh, damaged perforation or old lining. New filter mesh or a new lining is then applied. If necessary, we also repair welds, edges, reinforcements, bottoms or handles.

Repair or relining is useful when:

  • the filter mesh is torn
  • the basket is partially clogged or worn
  • the top edge or flange still fits properly
  • only the filter surface needs to be replaced
  • a fast repair is required
  • complete replacement is more expensive
  • the filter basket must fit back into the same installation
