Filter candles
Filter candles are cylindrical filter elements used to remove solid particles, dirt, fibres or other contaminants from liquids or gases. They are used in filter housings, piping systems, process installations and machines where reliable filtration and protection of the production process are important.
Omnimesh produces, repairs and re-covers custom-made metal filter candles. We work based on an existing model, technical drawing, sketch or description of the filtration problem. Depending on the application, filter candles can be constructed from stainless steel filter mesh, woven sieve mesh, perforated plate, support tube, slotted sieve or multiple filter layers.

Filter candles – designed for reliable filtration and long service life
A good filter candle must combine the correct filtration fineness with sufficient flow, mechanical strength and cleanability. That is why, for each design, we look not only at the required micron rating or mesh opening, but also at the medium, pressure, temperature, flow, contamination level, cleaning method and available installation space.
This gives you a filter candle that technically fits your installation and continues to function reliably in your process.
How does a metal filter candle work?
A metal filter candle works as a physical barrier. The filter medium allows the desired medium to pass through, while retaining unwanted particles. Depending on the installation, the flow can run from outside to inside or from inside to outside.
The filtration fineness is determined by the selected filter mesh, mesh opening, weave type, perforation or combination of different filter layers. For finer filtration, a multilayer construction can be used, where a fine filter layer is supported by coarser support layers.
A correct construction prevents the filter surface from deforming under pressure and ensures that the filter candle retains sufficient flow during use.
Construction of a filter candle
A filter candle can be simple or highly technical in construction, depending on the application. Often, the element consists of a combination of a supporting core, filter medium and end finishing.
Possible components include:
- inner core or support tube
- perforated stainless steel tube
- woven filter mesh
- fine stainless steel filter mesh
- support layers in coarser mesh
- perforated outer jacket
- end caps
- flange, thread or connection piece
- sealing edge or gasket zone
- welds or soldered joints
For applications with higher pressure, intensive cleaning or heavy contamination load, a reinforced construction may be required. For applications with high flow and compact installation space, a pleated filter candle can be an interesting option.
Custom-made filter candles
Not every filter candle fits within a standard design. That is why we also produce fully custom-made filter candles according to an existing filter, drawing, sketch or technical requirements.
Customisation is possible in:
- length and diameter
- filtration fineness
- mesh opening
- wire diameter
- number of filter layers
- end caps
- flanges or connection pieces
- thread
- support tube or outer jacket
- material selection
Reproducing a filter candle based on an existing model
When an existing filter candle is worn, damaged or no longer available, we can produce a new filter candle based on the old model.
We record the dimensions, connections, filter structure and material selection. If necessary, we improve the element by using a stronger filter mesh, a more durable material, a better support construction or an adjusted filtration fineness.

Repair and re-covering of filter candles
A damaged filter candle does not always need to be completely replaced. When the core, flange or end construction is still usable, we can replace the filter medium and make the element functional again.
During re-covering, we remove the old filter mesh or damaged filter medium and apply new mesh according to the required filtration fineness. If necessary, we also repair welds, edges, end caps or support structures.
Repair is interesting when:
- only the filter mesh is damaged
- the element is clogged or worn
- the construction is still usable
- a fast repair is required
- replacement is more expensive or difficult to obtain
- the filter candle must function again according to its original purpose
Filter media for filter candles
The choice of filter medium determines the performance of the filter candle. Depending on the required flow, filtration fineness and process load, one layer or a combination of multiple layers can be used.
Possible filter media include:
- woven stainless steel filter mesh
- fine filter mesh
- Dutch weave
- plain weave
- twill weave
- multilayer filter mesh
- perforated plate
- support grids
- perforated support tube
- pleated filter layers
- For fine filtration, a fine filter mesh is often used as the active filter layer. For stability, this can be combined with a coarser support weave or a perforated carrier.
Materials for filter candles
Filter candles can be produced in different materials. The correct choice depends on the application, medium, temperature, pressure, cleaning method and required service life.
For general industrial applications, stainless steel 304 is often used. In humid, corrosive, food-related or chemically demanding environments, stainless steel 316 or stainless steel 316L is usually selected.
When standard stainless steel is not sufficiently resistant to temperature, chemicals, wear or corrosion, special alloys can also be used according to the specific requirements of the process.
