Trommel/Rotary Screens and Vibrating Screens
Trommel/Rotary/Drum screens and vibrating screens are used to sort, classify, dewater or separate materials based on particle size. They are used in a wide range of industrial processes where capacity, wear resistance and reliable separation are important.
Depending on the application, trommel screens and vibrating screens can be fitted with woven screen mesh, filter mesh, crimped wire mesh, perforated plate, expanded metal, slotted sieves or a combination of different screening media.

What is a trommel screen?
A trommel screen is a rotating screen that separates material as it moves through a cylindrical drum. The fine fraction falls through the openings of the drum, while larger particles are discharged further.
Trommel screens are often used when large quantities of material need to be sorted continuously. They are suitable for coarse and medium separation, but depending on the screening medium, they can also be made for finer screening.
Trommel screens are used for:
- sorting of bulk materials
- soil and compost processing
- recycling
- waste processing
- sand, gravel and aggregates
- wood, biomass and organic materials
- dewatering and separation
- industrial process streams
- pre-screening or coarse classification
What is a vibrating screen?
A vibrating screen is a screening machine in which the screen surface is moved by vibration. The material moves over the screen deck, while smaller particles fall through the screen mesh or perforation.
Vibrating screens are used when accurate and efficient separation is required. They can be built with one or more screen decks and are widely used in production processes where capacity, control and consistent fractions are important.
Vibrating screens are used for:
- classification of granules and powders
- control screening
- dewatering
- separation of fine and coarse fractions
- removal of contamination
- sorting of raw materials
- process and production separation
- food industry, chemical industry, recycling and mining

Difference between trommel screens and vibrating screens
Trommel screens and vibrating screens have the same purpose: separating material by size or passage. The main difference lies in the movement and construction of the machine.
A trommel/rotary/drum screen works with a rotating cylindrical drum. The material moves through the drum and is separated during rotation.
A vibrating screen works with a vibrating screen deck. The material is guided over the screen surface and is stratified by the vibration, allowing smaller particles to pass through the screening medium.
For Omnimesh, the screen element itself is the most important part: which screening medium is required, how is it mounted, what load will it have to withstand, and how can it be repaired or relined?
Custom-made trommel/rotary/drum screen or vibrating screen
Many trommel screens and vibrating screens are machine-specific. Dimensions, radius, fixing method, screen opening and edge finish must fit exactly into the installation.
Omnimesh produces custom screen elements for trommel screens and vibrating screens according to an existing model, drawing, sketch, photo or dimensions.
Customisation is possible in:
- length and width
- drum diameter
- radius or curvature
- mesh opening or perforation
- wire diameter
- plate thickness
- open screen area
- edge finish
- tension edge or mounting edge
- support rings
- welded construction
- material choice
- replaceable sections or panels
This allows the new or repaired screen element to be correctly mounted again in the existing installation.

Repair, relining and rescreening
A damaged trommel screen or vibrating screen does not always need to be completely replaced. When the basic construction is still usable, we can replace the screening medium or repair the structure.
During repair, we check the condition of the frame, rings, welds, fixings and screen surface. Damaged screen mesh, worn perforation or loose lining is removed and replaced with new material.
We can, among other things:
- reline trommel screens
- rescreen vibrating screen frames
- replace worn screen mesh
- replace perforated plates
- repair support rings or edge zones
- repair welds
- correct deformed parts where possible
- improve existing screen elements
Repair is useful when:
- only the screen surface is damaged
- the frame or drum is still usable
- a fast repair is required
- complete replacement is more expensive
- the machine needs to be running again quickly
- the screen element must work again according to its original function
