Conical Filters
Conical filters are metal filter elements in a cone shape or truncated cone shape. They are used to remove solid particles, dirt, fibres, metal particles or other contaminants from liquids or gases.
Thanks to their conical shape, they can be compactly installed in pipelines, filter housings, process installations or machines. They are used where filtration is required, but where the available space, flow direction or mounting method requires a specific filter element.


What is a conical filter?
A conical filter is a metal filter element with a cone-shaped structure. The filter is used to retain unwanted particles from a liquid or gas stream, while the medium continues to flow through the filter surface.
Conical filters are often used in piping systems, process installations, machine construction and industrial filtration. Their shape makes them suitable for applications where a cylindrical filter element is less practical, or where the flow, mounting method or available space requires a conical shape.

How does a conical filter work?
A conical filter works as a physical barrier in the process stream. The medium flows through the filter medium, while solid particles are retained by the mesh, perforation or multilayer filter structure.
The filtration rating is determined by:
- the selected filter mesh
- the mesh opening
- the perforation size
- the type of weave
- the number of filter layers
- the open filter area
- the support of the filter medium
- the flow direction and load
A correct construction prevents the filter surface from deforming under pressure and ensures that the conical filter maintains sufficient flow during use.
Conical filters are usually made to measure. The shape, diameter, length, cone angle, ring and filtration rating must match the installation in which the filter element is placed.

Repair and relining of conical filters
A damaged conical filter does not always need to be completely replaced. When the ring, collar, flange or basic structure is still usable, we can replace the filter medium and make the element functional again.
During relining, we remove the damaged filter mesh, worn perforation or old filter layer. New filter mesh or a new lining is then applied according to the required filtration rating. If necessary, we also repair welds, edges, support layers, handles or sealing areas.
Repair is useful when:
- only the filter mesh is damaged
- the ring or collar is still usable
- the cone can be partially repaired
- the element must fit exactly into the same installation
- complete replacement is more expensive or more difficult
- the conical filter must work again according to its original function
Filter media for conical filters
The choice of filter medium determines the performance of the conical filter. For coarse protection, perforated plate or coarser wire mesh may be sufficient. For finer filtration, stainless steel filter mesh is often used, possibly supported by drainage mesh or perforated plate.

For fine filtration, a conical filter can be built with an outer filter layer for fine particles and an inner support layer for mechanical stability.
