Filter discs and insert filters are compact metal filter elements used to remove solid particles, dirt, fibres or other contaminants from liquids or gases. They are used in pipelines, filter housings, injection systems, cooling circuits, test setups, process installations and machines where only limited installation space is available.

What is a filter disc?

A filter disc is a flat, round or shaped filter element that is placed in a housing, pipe, coupling or filter holder. The medium flows through the disc, while solid particles are retained by the filter mesh, perforation or multilayer filter structure.

Filter discs are often used when a compact filter solution is required with a precise filtration rating. They can be made flat, but can also be pleated to create more filter surface within the same diameter.

What is an insert filter?

An insert filter is a removable filter element that is placed inside a pipe, opening, filter housing or process component.

Insert filters are often used as a simple and practical protection against dirt or solid particles. They are useful when the filter element must be easy to install, remove and clean.

How do filter discs and insert filters work?

Filter discs and insert filters work as a physical barrier in the process stream. The medium flows through the filter surface, while unwanted particles are retained.

The filtration rating is determined by the selected filter medium. This can be woven filter mesh, perforated plate, a sintered structure, a pleated filter layer or a combination of several layers.

Depending on the application, the flow can run from top to bottom, from inside to outside or from outside to inside. That is why edge finishing, sealing and mechanical support are important to prevent the medium from bypassing the filter.

Multilayer filter discs with spot welds

Filter discs can be constructed from several layers of filter mesh that are joined together by spot welding. Different layers of stainless steel filter mesh are placed on top of each other in the correct order and connected at fixed points.

The advantage of this construction is that each layer can have its own function. A fine filter layer provides the required filtration rating, while coarser support layers add mechanical strength and protect the filter mesh against deformation under pressure or flow.

By spot welding the layers together, they remain correctly positioned during installation, use and cleaning. This improves dimensional stability, prevents shifting between the layers and makes the filter disc stronger and more durable than a loose single-layer mesh disc.

Multilayer spot-welded filter discs are useful when:

higher mechanical strength is required
fine filtration must be combined with sufficient support
the filter element must withstand pressure or flow
several filter layers must remain correctly positioned
a compact but durable filter disc is required
cleaning and reuse are important
loose filter layers must not shift during use
